Individual Tutoring

I offer highly personalized math instruction in person or on Zoom for children in grades 2–8. With over 44 years of experience, my approach goes beyond typical tutoring. Through ongoing observation and interaction, I dynamically assess each child’s mathematical, executive functioning, and cognitive strengths and challenges. This allows me to adapt every session to the unique and evolving needs of the student.

My sessions are tailored to each student’s goals, whether they want to:

  • Learn more challenging math than is typically offered at school
  • Explore topics in greater depth
  • Strengthen foundational skills

What Makes My Tutoring Unique

I believe that teaching math is not just about solving problems—it’s about empowering children with the tools to think critically, learn independently, and build lifelong skills.

Here’s what sets my work apart:

  • Love of Learning: I have has a deep love of mathematics and of learning since I was five years old. My goal is to pass on this love of learning to every child I work with.
  • Personalization: Every session is customized to address your child’s specific strengths, challenges, and goals.
  • Building Lifelong Habits: I model and guide children in adopting habits that align with their developmental readiness and learning needs.
  • Integrated Learning and Executive Function Skills: By combining math mastery with strategies for learning how to learn, I help children develop confidence, independence, and resilience.

I use a combination of:

  • Clear and direct instruction.
  • Carefully sequenced questions to encourage discovery.
  • Engaging logic mysteries and puzzles I’ve designed.
  • The online learning platform Math Academy for mastery and practice.

Based on each child’s needs, I integrate tips on how to learn and executive function strategies directly into our math sessions. These elements empower children with skills they can use far beyond the classroom.

Learning How to Learn

This includes research-based strategies designed to maximize learning efficiency and effectiveness:

  • Spaced Retrieval: Revisiting material at intervals to strengthen memory.
  • Active Learning: Solving problems and reflecting on reasoning to deepen understanding.
  • Retrieval Practice: Strengthening recall through self-quizzing and memory exercises.
  • Interleaving: Mixing different types of problems to improve flexibility and retention.
  • Layering: Building new skills on top of mastered ones for deeper connections.
  • Habit Formation: Encouraging consistent daily math practice for steady progress.
  • Minimizing Cognitive Load: Simplifying tasks with step-by-step guidance.
  • Self-Advocacy: Teaching students how to ask for help or seek challenges in school.
  • Metacognition: Encouraging reflection on learning processes to improve strategies.
  • Mathematical Confidence and Mastery: Helping students develop fluency, tackle challenges, and recognize their growth.

Optimizing Executive Function

Based on a child’s needs and developmental stage, I weave executive function skills into the math sessions. These can include:

  • Organization: Structuring work and managing materials effectively.
  • Time Management: Creating realistic schedules for homework and projects.
  • Working Memory Strategies: Strengthening recall and managing cognitive load.
  • Self-Monitoring: Reflecting on progress and adjusting approaches as needed.
  • Task Initiation and Focus: Breaking tasks into manageable steps to stay engaged.
  • Emotional Regulation: Managing frustration and building resilience during challenges.
